When it comes to cyber security hardware, there are two options: cloud computing and virtualization. Many may not understand the difference between the two. However, it is important to know the differences between cloud computing and virtualization to help keep sensitive data protected.

The dictionary defines cloud computing as “the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.” Cloud computing is internet-based, which allows for remote usage via the cloud.

The cloud is used to replace the traditional hardware server. Businesses can store their emails and other important documents in the cloud by paying for online storage space and processing time. This allows for the security of a hardware system to be carried into remote work. 

With remote work becoming more of the norm, the cloud gives businesses the flexibility to work from anywhere without sacrificing security. Cloud computing has allowed many businesses to become more profitable due to lowered overhead operation costs with the flexibility of being able to work outside of the office.

What is virtualization?

Virtualization is running an emulated—or virtual—computer, often across multiple physical computers. The OS and any software running on the virtual computer have no idea they are running on a virtual environment rather than one physical computer.

Virtualization enables more efficient use of physical computer hardware by allowing a greater return on an organization’s investments in hardware. Virtualization is able to deliver multiple services at once and works as a foundation for cloud computing.

Companies that purchase resources from the cloud have to depend on an outside source to manage and secure their data, while virtualization can take place within an organization’s own facility. 

Since the pandemic, it has made a lot more sense for companies to switch to cloud computing. This has allowed many companies to transform their business model by allowing their employees to work from anywhere while keeping their sensitive data safe.
